Leicester man bags Bollywood role with famous namesake

A Leicester man who is named after a famous Bollywood star has ended up with a role in a film with his famous namesake!
Dharminder Shoker from Knighton, Leicester, is Asset Manager at the University of Leicester where a crew of over 100 are located for the shooting of Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 (Mad Madder Maddest 2).
The film features Bollywood legend Dharmendra and his star sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. The family franchise movie is a sequel to the blockbuster hit of the same name.
Dharminder Shoker has been making arrangements for the shoot at the University campus where the botanic garden, Library, Students’ Union and halls of residence are being used as a backdrop for the movie.
He said: “I first met Sunny Deol and his team a couple of months back, when they had been invited by the University of Leicester to take a look around the campus as part of their location scouting visit in Leicester.
“It was very exciting to get to meet such a massive Bollywood film star, and a very proud moment when the entire team immediately began to complement the University’s campus and the facilities we provide here.
“The crews first location visit coincided with our summer graduation –and Sunny also took time out to meet some of the graduating students and their families.  They were thrilled!”
Filming was quickly scheduled across the University’s estate at the main University Road site as well as the Oadby Student Village including the Botanic Gardens.  But there was also a surprise in store for Dharminder:
“It was totally unexpected when the YPD team handed me a script for three scenes in the film, asking me to play the role of Mr Jindal, Sunny’s client in the film. I play a UK-based banker who assigns Sunny’s character, Parmveer Singh Dillon, with a project which is where the story develops from.
“Having never acted before, but always up for a challenge, I accepted and got rehearsing.”
Sunny Deol said: “Dharminder Shoker showed plenty of enthusiasm and passion for the role. People will certainly notice him in the film and we are very pleased with his contribution.”
Before filming commenced, Dharminder Shoker visited Jasvinder Singh Bath, story/script writer of both the YPD films and Sangeeth Sivan,  Director of the film, to rehearse.
“Little did I know that the Bollywood legend himself, the senior Deol, Dharmendra, was also going to be at the location. It’s no secret in our family where my parents got their inspiration from when they named me, so it was a litter nerve-racking to say the least when first meeting Dharam Ji. But after receiving such a warm Punjabi welcome and his blessings, I was good to go.
“The very first day of filming started at the University’s award-winning David Wilson Library, with the first scene in which Sunny and I meet. When I arrived on the set with my wife, Parneet , who joined me for much needed moral support, we were immediately made to feel part of the YPD family and I was whisked off for make-up  -yes make-up!
“Having never been on a film set before I expected it to be chaotic, but I was pleasantly surprised at the way in which the operation ran like clockwork and how the whole film crew put their heart and soul into the shoot.
After the Mahurat had taken place  on the University campus (the blessing ceremony which takes place before the first day of filming), Sunny kindly took me under his wing. I am not sure how many film stars of the Deol’s calibre would go to the lengths, even making the extra effort to give me cues when he was out of shot.
“I was also extremely happy to learn that as part of the Bollywood experience in Leicester, the YPD team have been keen to encourage technical involvement from the University’s  film studies students and through the added support and guidance of Steve White, Leicester’s highly enthusiastic ambassador for education and Ashwani Chopra FRSA, the highly experienced UK based Line Producer for the film, this should prove to be a very useful work experience for our students.”
The crew for YPD2 will be in Leicester until November and the film is being released next summer.

Sunny said: “It’s wonderful to be back in Leicester.
“The warm welcome my family has received from the University of Leicester has been wonderful.
“We are looking forward to using the campus as it has splendid facilities and a fantastic estate which will add to the visual appeal of the film. Also the students will get an opportunity to work with us and get hands on practical experience of film making.

“So far it’s been wonderful shooting here and we look forward to shooting in other parts of the city and region.”
Ather Mirza, spokesperson for the University of Leicester added: “We are delighted to showcase the University of Leicester to the global audiences that Bollywood films attract and it is an inspiration for our students to work with stars of the calibre of Dharmendra, Sunny and Bobby.
"As a film industry dynasty, they are tremendously well respected and well known, and their presence on campus will have a huge impact.

Heroines of the movie are Neha Sharma who featured in the film Kya Kool Hai Hum and Aussie model Kristina Akheeva. The film’s director is Sangeeth Sivan who directed Kya Kool Hai Hum and EK, the Power of One, amongst others.
The film opens in Scotland, travels to Banaras in India and eventually makes its way to UK –and Leicester.
The story revolves around Paramveer Singh Dhillon (Sunny Deol), a dashing, honest and righteous loan recovery agent with a unique working style.
In another universe called Banaras, much to Paramveer’s dismay, his folks Dharam (Dharmendra) and Gajodhar (Bobby Deol) have failed to mend their ways and continue deceiving people.
"This time though they have a greater con up their sleeves. Their latest fish is, Yograj Khanna, a rich Night Club owner from England. Shrewdly Dharam intends to hook up Gajodhar with Yograj’s strikingly beautiful daughter, Suman, posing as a billionaire himself.
Dharam and Gajodhar land in UK and to their surprise find that Paramveer is Yograj’s new night club manager. Thus unfolds a series of hard core conning by the father-son duo with Paramveer hell-bent on ruining every last effort.
The film is produced by YPD Films Ltd (UK) and Sunny Sounds Pvt Ltd. (Sister Concern of Vijayta Films Pvt. Ltd.)

The film features Dharmendra Singh Deol – known as the Action King of Hindi cinema – who has appeared in more than 270 films.
Production manager Andrew Cooke said: "We're looking for about 700 extras which I'm sure we'll get.
"They don't need to be able to dance or sing, they just have to turn up and fill out the background.
"This is a great opportunity for anyone who loves Bollywood.
"It's my first Bollywood film and I must say it's quite an experience."

A team of about 70 cast and crew has flown over from India to produce the film, which will be shown to millions of people worldwide.

Sunny Deol Biography

Date of Birth
19 October 1956, New Delhi, India

Birth Name
Ajay Singh Deol

Height
5' 11" (1.80 m)

Bollywood's action supremo, Sunny Deol was born to mega star Dharmendra and is his eldest son. Right from the beginning, carrying his father's USP firmly forward, Sunny Deol was well built and good looking. He debuted in the super hit Betaab (1983) and went on to consolidate his status as the nation's foremost and most wanted action hero with films like Arjun (1985), Tridev, Dacait and Ghayal (1990). It was Ghayal that got him his first Best Actor award and there was no looking back after that. In the film, Sunny's performance was lauded by audiences left, right and centre and to date is considered a benchmark for an intense performance, amongst elite films. Perhaps one of only two stars from the 1990s to create long-lasting hysteria amongst millions of fans the world over, his mere presence in a film pulls in the crowds by the horde. In the 1990s, he went on to deliver hits like Jeet (1996), Ghatak (1996), Ziddi (1997) and Border (1997) before directing a very competent film, Dillagi (1999), that, though unsuccessful commercially, is to date his most loved performance by the urbane, overseas and multiplex audience. His co-star in the film Bobby Deol, his younger brother also shone through with a brilliant performance. However, Sunny's biggest hit to date, and also Bollywood's all time blockbuster was 2001's Gadar-Ek Prem Katha. The film catapulted Sunny to numero uno status that is yet to be challenged. A strong man to the core, Sunny reflects the aura of legendary heroism that is oh-so missing from the rest of the current stars. Quite simply, the Action King of Bollywood.
